Plastic storage boxes with lids have become vital to many activities and functions of our family. I remember dreading the cost of buying our first half dozen plastic storage boxes with lids, but since they we have bought dozens more and used them for so many different things.

We use most of our plastic storage boxes with lids inside the house. Our first and primary use is for storage of clothing. We have six children and we had to implement a plan for storing clothing that is out of season. In April each year we take heavy sweaters, mittens, gloves, hats, and winter coats and put them all in identically sized plastic storage boxes with lids and stack them nicely in one corner of the basement or attic. The same day we pull out the plastic storage boxes with lids that have all the shorts, sandals, tank tops, swim suits, and other summer clothing and put those all into the dressers. This also helps avoid loosing clothing items that are not being worn or having them played with when they are out of season. Additionally each of our children are allowed to keep one of the plastic storage boxes with lids for keeping their special items from their childhood and we call this "special box". In these boxes are flower girl wedding dresses, teddy bears, awards and trophies, and anything else of major sentimental value.

We have many outdoor animals on our small hobby farm and we have found that plastic storage boxes with lids make a great way to store animal feed, small equipment like curry brushes and extra leashes. We even keep some extra hardware like nuts, bolts, and screws in plastic storage boxes with lids.

You have to choose carefully from the large available selection of plastic storage boxes with lids, not all manufacturers create equally. If you are trying to keep things sorted it probably doesn't matter what brand you choose. If you want items protected from dust you need to carefully consider the way the lid fits and if it will keep dust and dirt out. If you want to keep pests out you need to choose something that rodents won't eat through and that bugs can't get through which is a very tight fitting lid. We currently have plastic storage boxes with lids from four different manufacturers and have rotated them around to find an appropriate use for each one.
